Devil's Canyon
Route Information

Devil's Canyon

Map Annotations:

Driving:
Drive the North Fork road from North Bend 23 miles past the Bare Mountain Trailhead. In a few hundred yards a sign warns of the bridge being out. Park at the barricade or on the road just before. Room for a few cars, just wide enough to turn around (do it first). The drive takes about 1 hour from North Bend, less if the road is good (which it has been the last couple years).

Hiking/Bushwhacking:
Cross the washed out bridge, and hike the road bed for 1.75 miles, keeping right at the one intersection. Wind uphill, and soon the road will come to an end. This is the site of the (old) Lennox Creek trailhead, elevation 2600' (allow .5 to .75 hours to this point.)

The trail begins rocky, wet and muddy, and soon starts gaining elevation in the woods. The trail is in bad shape although easy to follow, with a little brush at times. If it is wet, you will get wet. After about 20 minutes to 1/2 hour, the trail will switchback up along a huge ancient blowdown at about 3200'. This is the point where you will want to leave the trail for Devil's Canyon. Continue to the SW edge of the switchback, near a large western hemlock. There will be a brushy talus field to the SW. Climb onto this slope, and begin to traverse at the same elevation.

Keep at about 3200', and if anything, lose a little elevation after about 5-10 minutes to avoid some bad brush. The slope is open talus with some brush and trees which can be avoided. After about 1/2 hour, you will begin to see Devil's Canyon proper, a deep cleft beyond thick brush. The only way we can recommend here is to plow through the brush towards the canyon, but be careful when nearing the canyon! It drops off quickly in the brush to the bottom.

Somehow pick your way down the canyon walls, clinging on to vine maple or alder where available. If you have traversed correctly, you should be below a steep step in the creek, where a small natural cave appears below a large chockstone. The creek could be flowing down the steep canyon in the spring. Immediately at the steep step, look up to the left (facing uphill) and the adit should become visible. It will take some climbing skills and balance to reach the adit from the canyon floor. Not much room exists outside the adit, so be careful when exploring.
