Route Information

Grand Central Mine

A detail sketch map of the mine shows somewhat the layout of the mine, lengths and locations of some of the features.

Driving:
Drive US 2 east from the Index road 10 miles. Turn right at the sign for the 'Money Creek Campground' (short of first tunnel). Go past the campground and over the railroad tracks, where the road veers left. At a "Y" in the road, turn right on the Miller River road, go a short distance until the sign pointing right to the Money Creek road/cabin sites. You will be turning just before the Tyvek mansion. Continue past the newish cabins, for about .5 miles until you come to the concrete bridge that spans Money Creek. Turn left here on an unmarked road. This road can be rough with rocky sections and water bars requiring high clearance, but on our last trip was generally good. Branches may scrape your vehicle. After about .5 miles from the bridge, you will see a wide (turnout) area to the right - park here, but leave room for vehicles to go past. Elevation of turnout is about 1135'.

Hiking/Bushwhacking:
Head up the road from the turnout about 50 feet. You might see a rough path that starts up the hillside here, or abundant flagging. Start up the open forest hillside, either following the flags, or just heading up the path of least resistance. As you climb, keep slightly to the right, never to the left. After about 25 minutes (1400'), you will start to see cliffy areas above you in the woods. The Grand Central adit is here. You just have to find it.
