Driving:
Drive I-90 east to Snoquamie Pass, exiting at the first exit. Turn left under the freeway and head towards the Apental Road. Just short of the Alpental Road, turn right into the PCT North trailhead and park.
Hiking/Bushwhacking:
Hike the PCT north (or cut off on the old Commonwealth Basin trail if you know where it is) and hike approximately 2.25 miles on the PCT (or 1.4 miles on the old Commonwealth trail) to the junction of the "abandoned" Commonwealth Basin trail. Continue on the nicely maintained trail as it winds around the basin, and starts to head up, gaining elevation on Red Mountain. At around 4400' elevation, leave the switchbacks at a convenient point (we saw a small cairn). Time to here, 1.5 to 2 hours.
From the trail, head off cross-country across the slopes of Red Mountain. You will see a talus slope from the trail, you will want to traverse that. The strategy now is to maintain the same elevation, staying up as high as you can (just under 4500') without getting into trouble with the rock cliffs above. Stay in the open, and cross a few dirty and/or rocky gullies on the way. The mine is at 4750', and if you do it right, a rising traverse to avoid lower trees will put you right at the mine dump. Climb alongside it to the mine, UTM: 621603mE 5256686mN. Allow about 1 hour off trail.
